With Winter knocking on our door, we just wanted to give a reminder to winterize your home. Winterizing your home can be time consuming and, frankly, slips our minds as busy homeowners. Just a short list of tasks can get you ready for that brisk, winter season and help you save on your heating bill.

1. Insulate around your doors:

Draft guards such as door sweeps, door gaskets, and door corner seals can be installed on doors to help keep those drafts from sliding through those tiny cracks.

2.  Insulate Windows:

Caulking on the outside of windows can add that extra air-tight protection so cold air can’t get it and warm air can’t escape. A sponge-like double sided taped can be installed on the edge of the window and closed. Finally, for extra window insulation, you can place foam insulation under your window casing and then place the plastic window covers over the entire window to finish.

3.  Install Plug Sealants:

Some homes, especially ones that are older, aren’t insulated as well around the plugs. A foam plug sealant can be placed behind the cover to add extra insulation.

4. Insulating Attics:

Insulation in your attic should be 14-20 inches thick. If your attic hasn’t been insulated recently, the humidity in the home can cause the insulation to compact and therefore not insulate your home as well. Measuring each year can ensure you have the proper amount of insulation.

5. Fire and Carbon Monoxide:

Checking fire and carbon monoxide monitors yearly before winter. We recommend replacing batteries yearly, regardless of if they are still working. While it might seem tedious, the safety of your family is important.
